How do you handle confrontation?

Your bossy colleague pitches a bad idea. Your manager thinks you don’t deserve a raise. When working in teams, you often get stuck with the dullest tasks. Confronting others can be difficult. So how do you start such conversations at work? Whether you tend to give in, avoid confrontation, or push your opinion through—it can be done differently. You can learn to confront effectively.

Marcel Carné’s film “Le Quai des Brumes” (Port of Shadows) (1938), starring Jean Gabin, perfectly illustrates the archetypal Warrior who engages in confrontation and sets healthy boundaries.

Confrontation can be learned

Approaching confrontation tactically paves the way for open communication and mutual understanding. But addressing someone constructively is a skill. Think about it—how do you express your wishes? After this training, you’ll stop avoiding confrontational situations at work. Instead of burying your head in the sand or bulldozing others, you’ll learn how to face conflict in a meaningful, respectful way. You’ll benefit from this skill throughout your professional life.

In “Le Quai des Brumes,” Jean Gabin’s character, Jean, embodies the Warrior archetype: a deserter who confronts his past head-on, stands firm against manipulative foes, and sets unyielding boundaries in a world of betrayal (“I won’t let anyone dictate my fate”). He communicates with raw honesty and resolve, facing down threats without needless violence. The film showcases diverse conflict styles—from evasive lovers and vengeful rivals to passive allies—and reveals how a true Warrior asserts dignity and seeks justice.

Learn to confront

In just one day, you’ll discover how to improve your confrontation skills. With this ability, you’ll engage in higher-quality conversations and act more assertively. This alignment between your actions and values will boost your energy and satisfaction at work.

How we use “Le Quai des Brumes” in the training

  • Film clips as a starting point: We analyze Jean’s intense confrontations amid the fog-shrouded port. Where do you see the Warrior’s strength? What boundaries does he set? What conflict styles emerge in his rivals and companions?
  • Reflection exercises: Who do you identify with? How does Jean push back with integrity? What can you adapt for your workplace?

The training begins with identifying your personal conflict style. Then, in a small group, you’ll explore methods for confrontation and boundary-setting—inspired by the film.

During the training, you will:

  • Reflect on when it’s necessary (and unnecessary) to speak up
  • Learn to combine honesty with tact, making your perspective clear without aggression
  • Gain insight into thoughts and beliefs that hold you back from speaking up
  • Acquire techniques to express yourself constructively—just like Jean
  • Practice these techniques in your own work context (e.g., with your bossy colleague or manager)
  • Build confidence to embrace confrontation like a true Warrior

Who is this training for?

Do you often feel that your point doesn’t come across in meetings? Do you sometimes avoid situations when you probably shouldn’t? Learning to Confront is ideal for any professional who wants to engage in valuable, constructive conversations at work.
